Just kidding… Nothing inappropriate here, just a fun Introduction to Graphic Design class!
Explore the visual language of words and images and nurture your passion for all things graphic through an atmosphere of exploration, practice and play in this dynamic digital workshop. The week will begin with a balance of practical knowledge about design principles as well as a solid historical foundation of how great design has engaged us visually and motivated us commercially for hundreds of years.
We’ll spend time each day integrating the design elements we’ve discussed and studied into original, expressive pieces of visual communication. Starting with pencil on paper, we will sketch, sketch, sketch ideas with fluency until we flesh out a visually engaging package design for a client. And no, you don’t have to be a great sketch “artist” to succeed in graphic design! We will explore the concepts of graphic symbols, unleash the power of typography, as well as grasp a better understanding of color. By weeks end, we will be using some basic Adobe Illustrator skills, along with a sprinkle of Blooms Taxonomy to visually showcase a compelling visual idea!
Students will need a sketchbook as well as a laptop with Adobe Illustrator to create compelling vector graphics. In this workshop we will work in the studio, but also take short “field trips” around downtown to notice how graphic design is truly all around us! A digital camera or camera phone will be handy but not necessary.
We will become familiar with varying principles of graphic design by collecting examples of things that inspire them visually, playing online games (yes there is such a thing as graphic designer games!), and tour a small studio. Students will also increase their knowledge of contemporary graphic design though exposure to curated videos, hands-on computer instruction, and daily indoor and outdoor observation assignments.
Tamara Garza received her M.S in Visualization from Texas A&M University back in ‘08. She has been a member of the art faculty at Blinn College since 2016 where she has taught Photography, Graphic Design, Art Direction and Digital Illustration as well as lectured regularly on Art Appreciation. She has worked independently as a photographer (6) and graphic designer for over 15 years, having dabbled in visual effects for a spell after graduate school. She’s passionate about roller derby, classic ford mustangs, homemade tortillas and the life-changing experience of traveling to Europe and Mexico with an artist’s lens on life. She is a co-founding member of Garza Photo Design, a web and graphic design shop she manages from her home studio.
