Block Printing + Stencil Color Lab introduces students to relief printmaking through bold design, carving, and layered color applications. This class combines traditional linoleum printing with graphic stencil techniques inspired by poster art and handmade prints. This class can be repeated many times to reinforce skills. Core concepts include:

  • Design for Printmaking: Learn to simplify imagery into bold, high-contrast compositions using positive and negative space
  • Relief Carving Techniques: Develop skills in linoleum carving, including line work, shape creation, and texture
  • Tool Safety & Handling: Practice safe and effective use of carving tools and materials
  • Ink Application & Printing Methods: Explore brayer techniques, ink distribution, and pressure control for clean prints
  • Edition Printing Basics: Understand how to create a small series of consistent prints
  • Stencil Cutting & Registration: Learn to cut stencil layers and align designs for accurate multi-color printing
  • Layered Color Techniques: Build depth and visual impact through 2–3 layers of stencil-applied color
  • Creative Experimentation: Explore variations in color combinations and printing approaches
  • Studio Practice & Workflow: Develop organization and process skills for efficient print production
  • Final Print Collection: Complete a carved block and a small edition of prints (3–6) showcasing layered printmaking techniques
