Cut, Build, Print: Experimental Collage & Gelli Transfer Lab introduces students to layered collage and printmaking through a hybrid process that blends analog construction with digital preparation and gelli plate transfer techniques. This class emphasizes texture, composition, and experimentation across media. This class can be repeated many times to reinforce skills. Core concepts include:

  • Collage Composition: Learn to build strong visual compositions using layering, balance, and focal points
  • Texture Development: Create a personal “texture library” using paint, stamping, scraping, rubbings, and found materials
  • Mixed Media Layering: Combine paper, paint, and drawing to construct rich, dimensional surfaces
  • Illustration Integration: Draw into collage to enhance contrast, detail, and narrative elements
  • Digital Preparation: Scan and adjust artwork for print, focusing on contrast and image clarity
  • Gelli Plate Transfer Printing: Explore transfer techniques to create unique prints from original collage work
  • Layering & Ghost Prints: Experiment with multiple pulls, transparency, and unexpected textures
  • Creative Experimentation: Encourage risk-taking and exploration across both analog and print processes
  • Studio Workflow & Process: Develop organization and sequencing skills from concept to final print
  • Final Print Collection: Complete an original collage artwork and a series of gelli prints demonstrating analog-to-print transformation
